The Third International Conference on "Fire-Safe" Cigarettes was held in Norwood, MA, May 15-16, 2008. The event was sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the Harvard School of Public Health.
The conference brought together fire service and public health officials, insurance and law enforcement officials, and representatives from both Philip Morris and R.J. Reynolds, the country's leading tobacco manufacturers.
With 35 states having passed fire-safe cigarette laws and 10 states already having the laws in effect, the conference gave attendees an opportunity to discuss implementation efforts and challenges, enforcement, research, coordination of efforts, and possible approaches to measuring the impact of fire-safe cigarettes.
